Glenn Spiegelman - Galaxies

NextUpPrevious

Galaxies are my favorite winter-time targets. Long cool nights allow for extended expposure times, and more detail for these faint-fuzzies.

NGC 708
NGC 708

NGC 708: Also known as the Fath a cluster of galaxies in the Constellation Andromeda

NGC 891
NGC 891

NGC 891: Edge-on barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Andromeda. This image shows the pronounce central dust lane that is composed of dust and gas, and blocks the light of the billions of stars that populate the region.

NGC 2903
NGC 2903

NGC 2903: A Spiral galaxy, type Sc in the constellation Leo. It is found just below the end of the sickle (Alterf). It is approximately 337 light years from earth.

NGC 3628
NGC 3628

NGC 3628: This unusual edge-on spiral galaxy is a close neighbor of M65 and M66 in the constellation Leo. Notice the pronounced dust lane...

NGC 4038/4039
NGC 4038/4039

NGC 4038/4039: The Antennae Galaxies, about 60 million light years from Earth in the constellation Corvus, got their nickname from the wispy antennae-like streams of gas seen by optical telescopes. These wisps are believed to have been produced by the collision between the galaxies that began about 100 million years ago and is still occurring.

NGC 4032
NGC 4302

NGC 4302: A pair of closely positioned galaxies in the constellation Coma Berenices. NGC4302 is a thin edge-on galaxy with a pronounced equatorial dust lane. It's companion, NGC4298. is an Sc type spiral galaxy.

NGC 4565
NGC 4565

NCG 4565: An edge-on spiral galaxy of type Sb in the constellation Coma Berenices. It is approximately 30 million light years from Earth.

NGC 6027
NGC 6027

NGC 6027: Seyfert's' Sextet, a grouping of (as the name implies) six galaxies in the constellation Serpens

NGC 6688
NGC 6688

NGC 6688: This round galaxy is found in the constellation Lyra. It is amongst quite a few other galaxies in the region, the identifiable ones are noted, the largest of which is the spiral galaxy UGC 11325.

This LRGB image is composed of:
Lum: 4 * 480 seconds
Red: 4 * 960 seconds
Green: 4 * 960 seconds
Blue: 4 * 1536 seconds

For a total integration time of 4 hours and 22 minutes. Image capture and color alignment in MaximDL, final level and color balance in Adobe Photoshop.

NGC 7331
NGC 7331

NGC 7331: Spiral Galaxy, magnitude 9.7 is located in the constellation Perseus. It is similar in size and tilt to the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), but is 25 times more remote.

NGC 7331 is the central object of this image, it is surrounded by neighboring spiral galaxies:
NGC 7335, NGC 7337, NGC 7340, an MCG6-40-44

This image is an LRGB composite with a total integration time of 8 hours 12 minutes
Lum: 10 * 360 seconds
Red: 10 * 720 seconds
Green: 10 * 720 seconds
Blue: 10 * 1152 seconds

Alignment/combine, digital development, and Color Combine in MaximDL, final level set, color balance, and composition in Adobe Photoshop

M81/82
M81/82

M81/82: This wide field image captured M81 and M82 in the same field of view.

Leo Trio
Leo Trio

Leo Trio: A wide-field image of three neighboring galaxies in Leo: M65, M66, and NGC 3628

The Face
The Face

The Face: A group of galaxies in the Virgo cluster of galaxies. M86 and M87 form the 'eyes' -- NGC4438 forms the 'mouth'.
To fill out the grouping, you will also find NGC4402, NGC4406, NGC4425, NGC4435, and NGC4413
